L5R Fridays

Yesterday a few of us joined the Hattiesburg FNM crew for some L5R. All the J’s were in attendance although one was late and another was played a couple rounds of the FNM tournament before dropping out and joining us to observe (he’s new – we’ll get him playing soon). We saw the following decks: Big Oni, Battle Maidens, Goblin Swarm, Lion Virtue, and Scorpion Ninja. Winners were Oni, Goblins, and Ninja.

I think the most surprising moment of the night was when my Ninja deck was able to take a province on turn 2. I was playing Ninjas mixed with Bitter Lies Kensai to fill the gaps. I was running against Spider so I got to go first. One of my first personalities was Bayushi Mago, a boxable kensai with 3 force and a neat ability. I also held 3 weapons, one for 4 gold that gave +3 force and another for 3 gold (2 for me – scorpion) that gave +2 force. So I bought Mago thinking my opponent would buy just gold. He did, so on my second turn I bought 2 weapons and attacked. Luck was on my side and my opponent had no way to send my guy home. Result: scorpion(!) taking a province on turn 2. Now obviously this was a melding of JUST the right events, but it was surprising regardless.

Next week I should have boosters and starters from Path of the Destroyer and Harbinger. If you are looking to buy send me an email me with what you’d like and I’ll try to hold those items aside.

The Unstored Release Tournament Report

I’m proud to report that the Unstored have enjoyed our unofficial The Harbinger Release Tournament. I wish to congratulate Josh for his victory overcoming all other opponents playing Dragon! Our Monkey-Crab learned the joys of playing military-honor switch.

While our number was only four, there was a smattering of interest from the Friday Night Magic crowd. Ok, most of the interest revolved around comments like, “That game is still around? How?”. That said we have now found a venue to play on a weekly basis, and we picked up one new player. Perhaps we will pick up a few more as time passes.

Next week we shall play some constructed. Please join if you would like. I encourage all veteran players to join me and donate their extra cards to a pool for the new players as they join. Two goals I would like to see with the Unstored is to introduce L5R to new gamers and to encourage more play through making the game accessible. Perhaps one day we’ll see an Unstored member win a Kotei.
